County recorder won't seek re-election

DANVILLE — Vermilion County Recorder of Deeds Barbara Young has decided not to run for re-election next year after several years in office.

Young officially announced Wednesday that she will not seek a third term in November 2012.

After almost 30 years as a county officeholder, eight as recorder and 21 as director of the Danville Election Commission, Young said she plans to take some time off but has future political aspirations. She said she does not want to disclose those aspirations and referred to them as exploratory.

Young said she has loved her time as recorder and in the election commission but feels she has done all she can to improve the recorder's office.

"I've been very fortunate to have been given the gift of working in public service for so many years," she said.

Young said she has overseen the enhancement of the office's records-searching capabilities, providing 24-hour online access to records. Also, records from 1826 through 1987 are being scanned, archived and made ready for search by historical preservation groups. And, she said, she has started a property fraud alert system to safeguard local records against increasing numbers of property fraud cases.

Young said she will complete her current term, which runs through Nov. 30, 2012.
