MAHOMET — The village board has appointed a new police chief.
Michael Metzler will replace current Chief of Police Jerry Gamble, who plans to retire later this fall. Metzler has served as associate director of the Police Training Institute at the University of Illinois for nearly five years. He retired from the Urbana Police Department as a lieutenant in the criminal investigation division in 2007.
Metzler "is a very qualified candidate and we're so happy he accepted our offer," Mayor Deb Braunig said at Tuesday night's meeting.
"Mahomet is a great community," Metzler said after the meeting. "I know a lot of people who live here, and most of the law enforcement officers."
