Charity care at local hospitals

Following is how much free care several local hospitals gave away in their last full fiscal year, and how much a chunk that was of their net patient revenues. Carle figures are for six months only.

Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana:

$5,057,265, 3.2 percent.

Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville:

$3,855,285, 3.4 percent.

The Carle Foundation*:

— Carle Foundation Hospital: $6,159,812, 2.74 percent.

— Carle outpatient services: (Carle physicians, Arrow ambulance and outpatient surgery center): $3,844,000, 2.5 percent.**

Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Mattoon: $8,005,000; 4.2 percent.

* Due to Carle Foundation Hospital's purchase of Carle Clinic in 2010, the figures for Carle are for six months only.

** Only the hospital's charity care is reportable to the state attorney general's office. However, other medical services at Carle now fall under the foundation's charitable assistance policies, and Carle provided information about how much charity care they supplied for the same six months at the request of The News-Gazette.
