CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign man who allegedly had cocaine intended for sale in his apartment has been charged with a Class X felony.

Orlando Gatson, 26, who listed an address in the 100 block of Kenwood Road, was arraigned Friday on a single count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance alleging that on Thursday he had about 3 grams of cocaine in his apartment, within 1,000 feet of Kaufman Park.

The proximity to a park makes the crime a more serious felony, carrying penalties ranging from six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.

Champaign police had a search warrant for his apartment.

A release from police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said when officers made contact with Gatson about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, he ran back inside and was caught flushing something down the toilet.

Assistant State's Attorney Sam Rosenberg said police found about 3 grams of cocaine, $1,088 cash, and a digital scale in the apartment.

In addition to the charge filed Friday, Gatson has two unresolved cases from 2007 and 2010 charging him with obstructing justice.

Judge Richard Klaus set his bond at $75,000 and set his next court date for Dec. 20.
