URBANA — An Urbana woman accused of trying to set a building and a car on fire last month has been criminally charged.
Sharon D. Moore, 31, who listed an address in the 900 block of North Linview Avenue, was arrested Monday night for an incident that police investigated about a month ago.
Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan said that on Oct. 29, someone made several attempts to light a fire in a building in the 2000 block of North Lincoln Avenue which used to be a car repair business. Morgan said the man living in the building discovered that someone set fire to an exhaust fan on the building and to the gas tank of a car that was sitting out in front. Morgan said neither was badly damaged.
Morgan said the man living there had seen Moore, a former girlfriend, there at the time.
Police had been looking for her and found her in that neighborhood last night and arrested her.
On Tuesday, she was charged with arson for setting fire to the building and attempted arson for trying to burn up a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu by putting sticks and paper in the gas tank and trying to light them.
Judge Richard Klaus set her bond at $10,000 and told her to be back in court Jan. 3.
If convicted of the more serious arson charge, Moore faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.
