Police identify man found dead in Danville

UPDATED 2:50 p.m. Monday

DANVILLE - Danville police continue to investigate a shooting Sunday night that claimed the life of a 25-year-old.

The Vermilion County coroner’s office said Monday afternoon that Latrell A. Smith was found dead Sunday.

Doug Miller, deputy director of Danville police, said a resident of an apartment in the 900 block of Campbell Lane at the Fair Oaks public housing complex got home shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday night and found Mr. Smith in the apartment with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center’s emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

Miller said it’s not yet clear whether Mr. Smith lived at the apartment where he was found. The individual who found him does live at that apartment, he said, but is not a relative.

He said detectives are talking to relatives and anyone else who knew Mr. Smith along with anyone at the apartment complex who may have seen something in hopes of determining what happened.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

I am embarrassed to say that I live in Danville.

I am quickly looking for a way to get out some my 2 children are not raised in this hostile city. It's a shame that Danville has come to this.

I know that these things happen everywhere, but Danville is not a big city and when you grow up somewhere you don't expect these things to happen.

Oh give me a break! Murders happen everywhere.

That happened in a small town of less than 200 people. Better not move your kids there! I am sure that this incident in Danville was not a random act of violence, but rather the victim was most likely killed by someone he knew.

Please do let us all know when you find the perfect and 100% safe town to raise your children. I will be sure to follow you.

On another note, I love how the NG is quick to point out it's the "public housing complex".

I'm not saying that there is a place that is 100% safe. I know that murders happen everywhere. But this on top of the failing schools, the unemployment rate and other things are a huge reason to move out of this town.

The N-G was quick to point out that Fair Oaks is "a public housing complex" because that describes the area where the body was found.  If you look at other articles about recent murders it gives the street name and then a general description of what the general area is like where the body was found.

Or I guess they could have just said a poor neighborhood where lots of people are out of work, but that would just narrow it down to 15 square miles of Vermilion County.
