PHILO — A Tolono man is in police custody for allegedly trying to break into a Philo home earlier this week.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Curt Apperson said deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of West Grant Street about 3:30 p.m. Monday after a witness saw a man trying to kick in the back door of a home.
The would-be intruder ran, but a deputy spotted a suspicious car on the outskirts of town within minutes and tried to pull it over.
The driver took off, driving recklessly, Apperson said. The deputy followed for a short time, but because it was raining and the pursuit posed a danger to the public, Apperson said, the deputy stopped it.
Using the license plates of the car and information from the witness, deputies located John Sheets, 31, who listed an address on Sterling Drive in Tolono, at his place of employment in Champaign on Wednesday.
Sheets was arrested for attempted residential burglary and was expected to be formally charged Thursday afternoon.
