Bicyclist dies in collision

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign bicyclist died in a collision early Sunday in west Champaign.

Peter Lewis, 39, of Champaign was riding a bike north on Country Fair Drive at 2:39 a.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Dave Griffet of the Champaign police department.

Toccara Steele, 29, of Urbana was driving south, stopped at the intersection of Springfield Avenue. When the traffic light changed, she drove straight and hit Lewis' bicycle on the driver's side of her Buick Rendezvous. She stopped and tried to help.

Mr. Lewis was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, where he was pronounced dead at 7:02 a.m.

Griffet said Steele said she did not see the cyclist, who was wearing reflective material but did not have a light on his bike. She voluntarily allowed a blood test, the results of which are not yet available.

Griffet said no tickets have been issued.
