Teen charged in gun theft

MAHOMET — A Champaign teen was charged Tuesday with theft and aggravated unlawful use of weapons for allegedly stealing guns from a relative.

Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Ed Ogle said Devin Nofftz, 18, who listed an address in the 1700 block of Parkside Terrace, Champaign, was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing guns from a relative's home on Friday.

Deputies were called to a home in the 2000 block of Meadowlake Drive in Mahomet Monday after the resident discovered four handguns missing.

Deputies located Nofftz at his apartment and found one of the guns, which he said he took because he felt he needed protection.

Ogle said deputies are still looking for the other three weapons.

Nofftz’s next court appearance was set for Jan. 13.
