County, city officials prepping for snow

With a dose of winter weather heading our way in the next  few days, public works officials in Champaign County are getting ready to meet the challenge.

Superintendent with the Champaign County Highway Department Tracy Wingler said the county's plows and salt trucks have been loaded and are ready to go.  He said the trucks will likely be sent out early Thursday morning.

Wingler said there aren't any specific roads in the county that are more troublesome than others.  He said drivers should be cautious everywhere this week.

Urbana Public Works Operations Manager John Collins said the city will have some staff members on call in the early morning hours Thursday, but the city doesn't plan on sending out salt trucks until the rain turns to snow.

Collins said the city will notify residents by e-mail and through the media if they are required to shovel sidewalks.

In Champaign, Public Works Operations Manager Tom Schuh said the main city streets will be salted starting at 3 a.m. Thursday, then plows will be sent out when the snow starts to fall.

Schuh said residents should check the city's website to see if they are required to shovel their sidewalks.
