Man charged with felony over stolen copper

URBANA — A Newman man has been charged with felony theft for allegedly stealing parts from an air conditioner at a closed Urbana business.

Urbana police investigator Matt Quinley said Farrell E. Ware, 36, was arrested at a recycling center Thursday morning after a police officer went there looking for a man who had been seen taking items off an air conditioner unit at the now closed Helia Healthcare nursing home at 907 N. Lincoln Ave..

Quinley said a neighbor saw a man prying on the air conditioner and called police. No one was there when Office Doug Pipkins arrived about 8:45 a.m. but he got a description of the person and decided to go to Mack's Recycling on North Lincoln Avenue. He found Ware, who matched the description given by the witness, in the process of selling copper and aluminum air conditioning coils to the business for cash.

Pipkins interviewed Ware, who admitted taking the parts.

Quinley said the estimate to replace the coils was $1,000.
