Allegiant plans flights from Bloomington to Orlando

Allegiant Air will begin nonstop jet service to Orlando from Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, beginning May 16.

The flights will operate twice weekly between the Bloomington airport and Sanford International Airport in Sanford, Fla., which is just northeast of Orlando.

Introductory fares will be as low as $74.99 one way. That fare does not include taxes or fees and is not available on all flights. The fare applies to tickets purchased by Feb. 6 for travel by Aug. 14.

Allegiant already flies from Peoria International Airport to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tampa, Fla.

"We are confident that the new service in Bloomington will be a perfect complement to our existing service in the region and that residents of central Illinois will appreciate flying nonstop to Orlando," said Andrew C. Levy, president of Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co.

Central Illinois Regional Airport is also served by American Eagle, Delta and AirTran Airways, but AirTran is scheduled to discontinue service there June 2.

AirTran, which was recently acquired by Southwest Airlines, offers three flights a day to Atlanta from Bloomington and several flights a week to Orlando.

Central Illinois Regional Airport Executive Director Carl Olson said Orlando has been "a very popular destination with our customers, and we are excited for them to experience Allegiant's low fares and efficient nonstop service."

Vision Airlines, another low-cost carrier, began offering twice-a-week flights to Punta Gorda, Fla., from the University of Illinois Willard Airport in Savoy on Dec. 19, 2011. But the flights didn't last for long.

Vision's service was to be offered through March 31, but before flights even began, the airline discontinued service after Jan. 6.

Is it any suprise Williard is still in control of the U of I...with no direction or focus on improving.  The Champaign-Urbana area has got to be one of the poorest communities when it comes to politics and economical development.  Maybe if the cities (especially the Champaign City Council) focused their attention on issues that matter things might be different.  Lets fund another Boneyard Creek project or waste money on a witch hunt of the police department.
