St. Joseph man injured when car rolled over him

ST. JOSEPH — A St. Joseph man was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital Friday night after his own car rolled on him, pinning him underneath.

Champaign County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said Dean Rudicil, 81, of the 500 block of North Main Street in St. Joseph, was helping his girlfriend into the passenger seat of his older model Lincoln in his driveway just after 8 p.m.

Vercler said Rudicil shut her door and started around the back of the car when it apparently slipped into reverse and knocked him down. The car rolled over him, pinning him underneath, and came to a stop.

A man driving by saw Rudicil under the car, Vercler said, stopped and put the Lincoln in park. Other witnesses came by and the group tried to keep the weight of the car off Rudicil until St. Joseph-Stanton Fire Protection District firefighters could get there to free him.

He was taken by ambulance to Carle, where he remained Saturday in good condition.
