Five sheriffs endorse Barickman over Cultra

BLOOMINGTON — Five of the six county sheriffs in the newly drawn 53rd Senate District have endorsed state Rep. Jason Barickman, R-Champaign, over Sen. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga, in the March 20 primary election.

Barickman's campaign announced the endorsements Wednesday by Ford County Sheriff Mark Doran, Iroquois County Sheriff Derek Hagen, McLean County Sheriff Mike Emergy, Livingston County Sheriff Marty Meredith and Woodford County Sheriff James Pierceall.

Only Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn did not announce support for Barickman. Vermilion County makes up about 3 percent of the district's population. Most of Vermilion County is in the 52nd Senate District, now represented by Sen. Mike Frerichs, D-Champaign.

"I'm supporting Jason Barickman because he won't let his status as a Republican in the minority in Springfield stop him from getting things done," said Hagen, the sheriff in Cultra's home county. "I believe he can be effective for us, and be a real voice of leadership at the Capitol."

"Jason Barickman is the right man for the job," said Ford County Sheriff Mark Doran. "He will be a passionate advocate for his constituents, and is someone who can get things done."

"Five sheriffs endorse Barickman over Cultra". That alone would make me skeptical of voting for him. Sounds too much like a good old boys network to me.
