Champaign man arrested for shooting dog

CHAMPAIGN — A 32-year-old Champaign man was released on bond Sunday after being arrested overnight for allegedly shooting his dog in the leg.

Champaign police Sgt. Matt Crane said it was a “through and through” wound to the dog’s leg, which was treated at an emergency veterinary clinic. But when police showed up at the owner’s home at 2702 Arden Dr., they found five guns, including an AK-47 assault rifle.

Police arrested the man, Joshua A. Ingersoll, for animal cruelty, reckless discharge of a firearm and not having a firearm owner’s identification card.

Crane said Ingersoll was “heavily intoxicated” when police found him. Ingersoll does not have a prior criminal history, and police are continuing to look in to what caused his behavior.

Come on readers, where are your conceal carry comments now?

Oh I know, if he had a permit he would be properly trained to handle those guns while lit up like a christmas tree on the fourth of july.

One teen was killed and two were injured over the weekend in Mahomet.  Lack of proper driving skills and excessive speed were contributing factors.

If you'd like a real cause to pursue, here's one for you.

A drunk with a gun who injured a dog at his home... then trying to somehow tie that to concealed carry.... isn't even close to being one.

Actually, the article states that the perpetrator does not hold a FOID card, thus he owned his guns illegally, just as most criminals do and carry them at will regardless of the law.  People such as myself go around at their mercy, but the proposed concealed carry law would mandate extensive training on firearms and the law pertaining to their use and misuse.  We would be trained and we wouldn't be as careless as this nincompoop.  We would also know how liable we would be if we did the same thing.  Thank you for bringing it up on this unrelated topic and making our point for us.

I suppose somehow that Mqqneyes would have found it more acceptable if the idiot of this story had used a golf club instead of a gun.

It was the idiot's fault not the gun.

Trying to keep criminals from committing acts of gun violence by placing restrictions on normal law abiding gun owners-- Is like trying to keep drunk drivers off the roads by making it harder for non-drinkers to buy cars.

CCW doesn't even enter into this, he was at home.  This is nothing more than a drunk as a skunk idiot with guns he shouldn't have being what he does best, being an idiot.  Hell, even someone with a CCW can do something like this at home, but it still doesn't matter and has no bearing on the CCW debate.

I agree 100%.  This article is about a moron who was drunk and did a stupid thing--shooting his dog.  I hope the dog recovers and is placed in a loving home with a nice family! And as for the guy--throw him in jail for awhile!  Idiot!

An AK-47?!?!! O_O

This moron should get 5 years for just possesing such a weapon. Why are these types of guns needed again? It sure isn't for "sport." *eyeroll*

There's little difference between an AK-47 and any other rifle, apart from the size of its magazine.  It also has a weaker round than most hunting rifles.  It is most likely semi-automatic, one bullet fired for each pull of the trigger, if not then it is most likely illegal.  AK-47's are also one of the most innacurate rifles made with poor sights, I'd rather have someone shooting at me with one of these from 100 yards than a Remington 700 bolt action.  These rifles are legal in the vast majority of the country, so I think you'll have a hard time convincing the majority of the country.  Sounds like you need to move to California, though there they can own one with a magazine that's permanently attached.  How about France?  Fear of guns is born of ignorance, automobiles and heart disease are far more deadly; how healthy are you eating and exercising?

Way to school 'em, jdmac. Typically these comments by the uneducated don't deserve a second look, not to mention a response.

Come on are you kidding me?  Had he been drunk and stabbed the dog with a kitchen knife are we going to have a debate over whether or not people should be allowed to possess knives?  The guy was drunk and did a dumb thing.  He is to blame...not the AK that he happened to own.

an unregistered gun owner stinkin drunk, shooting his own dog in the leg.... how is that not a sport?

theone wrote on January 30, 2012 at 9:01 am

I doubt that the AK was an actual assault rifle.  Assault rifles are selective fire, meaning that they can either shoot one round per trigger pull or if selected can shoot multiple rounds per trigger pull.  The reporter needs to get the facts straight and quit trying to scare people.

SaintClarence27 wrote on January 10, 2013 at 10:01 am

There's no real definition of "assault rifle." It's whatever a given law says they are.

Yay!  More sensless killings and injury!  Support "Surprise! I've got a gun!" Carry!  What a joke.

jdmac44 wrote on January 30, 2012 at 1:01 pm

Americans defend themselves over a thousand times a day with firearms.  Oftentimes without firing a shot (intimidation of an assailant is the best weapon)  Just hide in your basement, you'll be fine.

SaintClarence27 wrote on January 10, 2013 at 10:01 am

Nice made up statistic. I can do it too. Crazy people make up a thousand statistics a minute on the Internet without a grain of truth to them!

No FOID card + 5 guns in possession = Criminal!

Thank goodness the dog's wound wasn't fatal.  I hope the pup finds a loving home while the former drunken-waste-of-oxygen owner finds God and his sobriety in jail.

Why an AK-47? Why a Camero? Why a Corvette? Why a Viper? Why a Cobra?  Because you can legally own one .  One shoots bullets, the rest can excede the speed limit by 3 to 4 times .  They are all dangerous in the hands of idiots, but legal..

Since there is little detail, maybe the dog bit him unprovoked. Under that circumstance the dog got off lucky. ;)
