Rantoul man charged with molesting 2 girls
URBANA — A Rantoul man who spent several years in a German prison for sexually molesting a child has been charged with molesting two girls in Champaign County.
Steven L. Wilkey Sr., 50, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Juniper Drive, was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child alleging inappropriate sexual contact with two girls that occurred between June 2009 and March 2011.
The girls, both under the age of 13, were in the care of Wilkey in Rantoul when the acts allegedly happened.
Rantoul police investigator Rodney Sullivan said a relative of one of the girls living in another state contacted Rantoul police with her suspicions after spending time with the girl over the holidays.
Sullivan said police have been investigating Wilkey for several weeks and had probable cause to arrest him Monday evening.
In court Tuesday, Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark told Judge Richard Klaus that Wilkey admitted touching one of the girls but not the other. The allegations are that he touched the girls under their clothing as they sat on his lap.
Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis, who reviewed the reports for charging, said Wilkey was convicted of a sex-related crime involving a child in Germany in 1997 and was sentenced to nine years in prison, of which he served about 7 1/2.
Assistant Public Defender Pam Burnside said Wilkey lives alone in Rantoul and has lived in Champaign County about six years.
Klaus set his bond at $500,000 and ordered him to have no contact with the two girls named as victims and two other children. If convicted of both counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, Wilkey faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
He is due back in court on March 13.
