Rantoul man faces sex charges

RANTOUL — A Rantoul man accused of sexually molesting two young girls last year has been criminally charged.

Champaign County Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said she filed three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and one count of criminal sexual assault against Shawn D. Lattimore, 19, who listed an address in the 100 block of South Chanute Street.

Lattimore was admonished by Judge Richard Klaus that if convicted of the predatory criminal sexual assault of both girls, he faces natural life in prison.

Clark said both girls were under the age of 13 at the time the sex acts allegedly occurred. The allegations are that one of the victims was repeatedly molested by Lattimore while the other was molested on one occasion.

Lattimore was in a position of baby-sitting one of the girls, who told an adult what had happened to her. The adult then contacted Rantoul police.

Clark said the acts allegedly happened between April and December 2011.

Klaus set Lattimore's bond at $500,000 and told him to be back in court Feb. 24 for a probable cause hearing.

Why does the headline suggest this is a "sex" case? Abusing a child is not about sex, it is about violence.  When we talk about rape and abuse as if it were akin to a "sex scandal" we minimize the seriousness of the crimes.
