Tolono man faces sex abuse charges

URBANA — A 23-year-old Tolono man accused of sexual contact with teenage girls has been criminally charged in Champaign County.

Caleb Cooke was arraigned Wednesday on warrants issued last week in two separate cases charging him with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The charges allege that Cooke had sexual contact with girls who were not old enough to give legal consent to a sexual relationship, during July and August 2011 and again between November 2011 and January of this year. The girls are from Sidney and Tolono.

The cases were investigated by the Tolono Police Department and the Champaign County sheriff's office.

If convicted, Cooke faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.

Judge Richard Klaus ordered that Cooke continued to be held in lieu of $100,000 bond — $50,000 in each case — and that if released, he have no contact with any female under the age of 18.

Cooke is due back in court March 20.
