Man going to jail for hitting girl on bike while he was drunk

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he was driving under the influence when he hit a girl on a bicycle last spring will spend the next three months in the county jail.

Jason Gaddis, 28, who listed an address in the 800 block of West Vine Street, pleaded guilty Friday before Champaign County Judge John Kennedy to misdemeanor DUI.

In addition to 90 days in jail, Gaddis was sentenced to two years of probation, ordered to perform 100 hours of public service, pay a fine of $1,250, and wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet for six months after he is released from jail. Under the terms of the agreement, he has to serve the entire 90 days.

Gaddis was arrested June 9 after he hit a 9-year-old girl who was riding her bicycle across Vine Street near Prairie in Champaign about 5:15 p.m. She was going back up on the sidewalk when she was hit by Gaddis, who was westbound on Vine.

He left the scene but was chased by witnesses who followed him to the 700 block of West Hill Street, where they encouraged him to stop and wait for police.

The girl was treated and released for her injuries.

Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis said a blood test performed on Gaddis showed his blood-alcohol concentration was 0.219 percent. Illinois motorists are presumed intoxicated with a level of 0.08 percent.

Kanis said Gaddis received court supervision for driving under the influence in Vermilion County in 2005.

Come on folks.... Second DUI, Fleeing the scene after hitting a 9 year old girl on her bike? If this man had pointed a gun at this young lady and fired shots at her, how much time would he recieve? I submit to you that when he sat behind the wheel of a automobile intoxicated, he took a substantial step towards committing the same offense he just didnt have a gun in his hand he had a steering wheel. It is time we start treating these DUI offenders like the murdering, maiming, life ruining criminals that they are. Every time you get behind the wheel intoxicated you might as well be shooting a gun into a crowd.
