URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted he caused the death of his roommate when he ran over him while drunk faces up to 12 years in prison.
William D. Crouch, 47, who listed an address in the 1000 block of East Water Street, pleaded guilty Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court to aggravated driving under the influence, admitting that he caused the death of Charles Moody, 39, on Sept. 5.
Mr. Moody died of multiple blunt force traumatic injuries he received from being hit with a minivan driven by Crouch.
Champaign County sheriff's deputies said the incident happened on Captiva Street near Illini Airport Road about 10:10 p.m. after the two men had argued about Mr. Moody's ability to drive. Both men got out of the van and Crouch said he was going to run over Mr. Moody, then did with Mr. Moody's van.
Crouch left with another man in the van but his own son ran away and contacted police. Deputies found Crouch at his home.
Assistant State's Attorney Chris Kanis, who negotiated the plea agreement with Crouch's attorney, Ed Piraino of Champaign, agreed to seek no more than 12 years in prison for Crouch even though the maximum sentence is 14 years. He could receive probation. A second charge of leaving the scene of an accident was dismissed.
Judge John Kennedy set sentencing for April 5. If Crouch receives a prison term, he'll have to serve 85 percent of it.
