Savoy woman ticketed for DUI in interstate crash

CHAMPAIGN — A Savoy woman was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol following an interstate collision that injured her and three others.

Illinois State Police at Pesotum said Joyce Elam, 24, was driving a sport utility vehicle east on Interstate 74 north of Champaign about 1:50 a.m. when she swerved to the right shoulder then swerved to the left across all three lanes of traffic before hitting the center median wall head-on.

The SUV flipped over and slid on its roof.

Elam and three passengers were taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. The others in her vehicles were Jasimine Fluellen, 19, of Chicago, and Lolita Barner, 24, and Ashley Glover, 24, both of Urbana. The report said all four women were wearing seat belts.

Barner remained hospitalized Saturday in good condition while the other women were treated and released.

Police said Elam was given tickets for driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Luckily the other three were wearing seat belts!  Can't believe they got into the vehicle if she had been drinking--not smart!
