Arrest made in connection with death of LeRoy woman

UPDATED 8:10 a.m. Thursday.

CHAMPAIGN — A 34-year-old man was arrested for obstructing justice after a 23-year-old LeRoy woman was found dead in his camping trailer.

Champaign police said late Wednesday afternoon that they arrested Steven Killam, who listed his residence as a camping trailer, which was in the parking lot at Carpet Master Carpet One at 1040 W. Bloomington Road, C.

Police were called to the trailer at about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday. Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said 23-year-old Hannah Prospal of LeRoy was found lying in the trailer, where she was pronounced dead just after 7 a.m.

“We did not find a visible or apparent cause of death,” said Champaign police Detective Sgt. David Griffet, according to a city release.

Police questioned Killam and learned that he had removed evidence from the scene which may have helped police identify how the death occurred. They arrested him for obstructing justice.

They also obtained a warrant to search the trailer but “did not discover any evidence to help show how the death occurred,” the city release said.

Autopsy results are awaiting the outcome of toxicology tests.

The death remains under investigation.

(The Champaign County coroner's office initially said Ms. Prospal was from Mahomet, then later said she was from LeRoy.)
