Autopsy performed on Decatur man found dead at rest area

TUSCOLA — An autopsy was performed Thursday on a Decatur man who was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in his vehicle at a rest area in Tuscola on Wednesday.

According to Douglas County Chief Deputy Peter Buckley, emergency personnel were called to the rest area at the intersection of U.S. 45 and U.S. 36 in Tuscola about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday.

They found Randell S. Chaney, 53, of Decatur slumped over in the seat of his 2010 Ford F-150. Buckley said a gun was found with Mr. Chaney's body in the vehicle.

Buckley said there was no indication of foul play in connection with Mr. Chaney's death.

"We don't believe another individual was involved in the incident," Buckley said on Thursday afternoon.

Douglas County Deputy Coroner Joe Irace said that Mr. Chaney was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Irace said an autopsy was being performed in Champaign-Urbana on Thursday. He said the preliminary results of that autopsy wouldn't be available until Friday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Douglas County sheriff's office and the Douglas County coroner's office.
