Next assistant police chief an item for Urbana council
URBANA — Sgt. Sylvia Morgan would replace exiting Assistant Police Chief Anthony Cobb in Urbana under the appointment Mayor Laurel Prussing hopes to make tonight.
At Police Chief Patrick Connolly's recommendation, Prussing will offer her appointment for the second-in-command post when the city council meets at 7 p.m. today in the Urbana City Building, 400 S. Vine St.
Morgan is in her 19th year as a police officer, and she has spent the past 12 as a sergeant, according to her resume.
"As a result of my diverse experiences within law enforcement, I possess a unique perspective when it comes to policing," Morgan wrote on her resume. "I believe that working with the community and citizens to solve problems is the only way to effectively address issues while achieving the maximum result."
In an email to Prussing, Connolly wrote that Morgan's most noteworthy strength is her extensive knowledge of the department and the police union.
"In addition, her work within the community clearly demonstrates that she supports the department's philosophy with respect to working together in the community to resolve the community problems and enhance the quality of life," Connolly wrote.
Morgan would replace Cobb, who in January accepted the police-chief job in Champaign. Cobb starts his new job on March 12.

It sure isn't every day that while the Urbana officers are on a stake out they're witnessing other felony crimes being commited. Woo Hoo, bigger pool, smaller police departmen!
