Man sentenced to 54 years for sexual assaults
URBANA — A Champaign man convicted of molesting two girls who were in his care will have to serve at least the next four decades in prison.
Judge Heidi Ladd sentenced Manuel Martinez, 44, who last lived in the 2000 block of Cynthia Drive, to 54 years in prison for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
The convictions stemmed from acts that happened on Aug. 7, 2010, with girls aged 11 and 13 in the Champaign apartment where he lived with the mother of one of the girls.
Under truth in sentencing, Martinez will have to serve 85 percent, or 40 years, of the 47 years that Ladd gave him for the predatory criminal sexual assault and the criminal sexual assault, but can get day-for-day good time for the seven years he received for the aggravated criminal sexual abuse.
Assistant State's Attorney Adam Dill sought the maximum 75 years for Martinez while Public Defender Randy Rosenbaum sought a lesser sentence.
Martinez told the judge he was wrongly accused and maintained his innocence. Ladd said she felt the evidence against him was overwhelming.
