URBANA — The public is invited to the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday of the 2012 Eric Show, an exhibition of art by area high school students, at the Illini Union Art Gallery, 1401 W. Green St., U.
The show will remain on display through March 30.
The third annual Eric Show is a juried art exhibition endowed by Urbana residents Dale and Peg Steffensen in memory of Dale's son Eric (1951-1970). During high school, Eric won several awards for his art and demonstrated remarkable potential. He was working with Rob Fisher, then a sculpture professor at the University of Illinois, and preparing to be an art major at the UI.
Eric was killed by a drunken driver while driving home from a hockey game in 1970 at Race and Michigan streets in Urbana. The Steffensens hope the show will honor his memory as well as encourage and inspire the young artists of the community.
The following schools are represented: Champaign Centennial High School, Champaign Central High School, Heritage High School in Broadlands, the High School of St. Thomas More in Champaign, Fisher High School, Monticello High School, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley High School, University Laboratory High School in Urbana and Urbana High School.
The Eric Show High School Art Competition is organized by 40 North 88 West, Champaign County's Arts, Culture and Entertainment Council.
