MAHOMET — Mahomet police arrested two male students of Mahomet-Seymour High School Wednesday night for a break-in at the school.

Police Chief Mike Metzler said about 9:30 p.m., a resident in the neighborhood of the high school called to report seeing a suspicious pickup truck in the area, parked partly in his yard and partly on the street.

Metzler said it was unusual because it was in a spot where there is no good place to park and adjoins a wooded area near the high school.

When the officer arrived, he saw two men getting in the truck and stopped to talk to them.

"Their behavior led him to dig a little further. He discovered they had been involved in a burglary to the greenhouse at the high school," Metzler said.

They were identified as Travis Hinton, 17, of the 700 block of Heather Drive, and Austin Childress, 17, who listed an address on DuPage.

The two were arrested and taken to jail. On Thursday, the state's attorney's office charged them with burglary and theft from a school. If convicted of the more serious burglary charge, they face a maximum penalty of up to seven years in prison.

Metzler said police recovered equipment used to grow plants from the truck. They were continuing to follow up on Thursday.
