Motorcycle accident leaves one dead, one injured

MONTICELLO — Piatt County sheriff's deputies are investigating a motorcycle crash that killed a Monticello man and seriously injured his teen-age stepdaughter Thursday night.

Chief Deputy Mark Huckstep of the Piatt County sheriff's office said Michael Hyde, 39, of Monticello, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on the Allerton Road.

Huckstep said Mr. Hyde's stepdaughter, Lindsey Franklin, 19, also of Monticello, was critically injured and airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana following the crash, which happened about 8:20 p.m. Thursday.

Huckstep said Mr. Hyde was driving northeast on the Allerton Road, just south of the city, when he apparently left the side of the road near a curve and lost control in a ditch with gravel. Neither Mr. Hyde nor Franklin was wearing a helmet, Huckstep said.

Huckstep said the coroner pronounced Mr. Hyde dead at the scene about an hour after the crash, although they believe he probably died upon impact. Although the accident was not witnessed, Huckstep said a passerby came upon it soon after it happened and called for help.

An accident reconstruction specialist with the Illinois State Police is helping the sheriff's office try to determine how the accident happened.

Huckstep said Mr. Hyde was a Monticello city employee.

I worked with Mike for several years, and have ridden with him on several occasions.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family - Mike was a great guy, and will definitely be missed!
