Monticello man arrested for aggravated criminal sexual abuse

MONTICELLO — A Monticello man is being held at the Piatt County Jail on $150,000 bond following his arrest for aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated criminal sexual assault involving a 17-year-old girl.

John A. Sims, 42, who listed an address in the 800 block of North Walnut Street, Monticello, was also arrested for multiple violations of his predatory sexual offender registration.

Piatt County Sheriff D.W. Hunt announced on Monday that his office arrested Sims at his home at 12:46 p.m. March 2.

After receiving an anonymous tip, sheriff's investigators learned that Sims was taking part in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl over whom he held a supervisory role, according to a police report.

Police said that Sims allegedly was meeting the girl at locations where registered offenders are prohibited from meeting with children. He also allegedly traveled to the girl's school to watch her there, the report said.
