URBANA — A Champaign man remained jailed Saturday, accused of having crack cocaine intended for sale.
Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Curt Apperson said his department and the Urbana police department's narcotics unit arrested Stephen M. Wells, 33, who listed an address in the 800 block of Maple Street, Champaign, early Friday.
Apperson said police obtained a search warrant for an apartment at 808 N. Lincoln Ave., U, that they had been watching for a couple of months because of alleged drug dealing going on there.
They served the warrant about 6 a.m. Friday and found Wells in the apartment along with about a half-ounce (14 grams) of suspected crack cocaine.
Apperson said there was evidence suggesting that Wells lived in the apartment. He was arrested for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He appeared in court Saturday, where his bond was set at $200,000.
Wells is expected to be formally arraigned on Monday. Champaign County court records indicate Wells has prior drug-related convictions.
