Man faces felony drug charge

URBANA — An Urbana man has been charged with a Class X drug felony after his arrest Saturday in Champaign.

Ammon R. Gray, 38, who listed an address in the 1000 block of Coler Avenue, was charged Monday with unlawful possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance.

According to a Champaign police report, on Saturday, Gray was allegedly attacked by his brother in Skelton Park in the 100 block of West Washington Street, Champaign. As police investigated, Gray continued to put his hands in his pockets even though officers told him not to. He admitted he was looking for his knife.

Once he was handcuffed, police searched him and found more than 10 grams of cocaine in his pants pockets, the report said.

Because he was in a city park with suspected cocaine, Gray was charged with a Class X felony carrying penalties upon conviction ranging from six to 30 years in prison.

Judge Richard Klaus set Gray's bond at $50,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for June 5.
