Champaign man arrested in drug case

URBANA — A Champaign man who police say had heroin intended for sale was arrested outside his home Wednesday.

Assistant State's Attorney Steve Ziegler said Champaign police went to the apartment of Cortez Wright, 30, in the 1400 block of West Kirby Avenue, to serve a search warrant and arrest Wright based on earlier controlled drug buys.

Police arrested him as he came out of the apartment building. They found a bag containing 22 smaller bags with a total of 7 grams of what they said was heroin in the bushes near where he came out. Ziegler said Wright admitted to police that it was his.

Ziegler charged Wright Thursday with possession with intent to deliver an controlled substance. Because of prior convictions for aggravated criminal sexual abuse and unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, Wright faces 6 to 30 years in prison if convicted.
