Man charged with burglary in Urbana

URBANA — A multiple convicted burglar has been charged with residential burglary for an alleged break-in in Urbana in March.

Urbana police detective Shaun Cook said Tony Dorsey, 52, who listed an address in the 900 block of North Harvey Street, may be responsible for about a dozen burglaries in north Urbana over the last few months.

Dorsey was arrested Thursday after an Urbana woman noticed her bicycle in the window of a resale shop on East University Avenue in Champaign earlier that day. She reported it to Urbana police who found that Dorsey had brought it in. Cook said the woman's bicycle, which had a unique lady bug bell on the handlebar, had been stolen from a storage shed at her home in the 1100 block of Fairview Avenue in December.

Police also checked another nearby resale shop and found DVDs, apparently brought in by Dorsey, that were linked to a burglary that occurred in the 1100 block of North Lincoln Avenue on March 16. In that burglary, two televisions, a guitar, a DVD recorder, several DVDs and a DVD player had been stolen.

Dorsey was charged with only the North Lincoln Avenue residential burglary on Monday. His bond was set at $75,000 and he was told to be back in court June 12.

Court records show Dorsey has four prior burglary convictions and one for robbery dating to the early 1990s.

Cook said in many of the burglaries he's investigating, Dorsey admitted to taking small items when people either were not home or from storage sheds or garages that were left unlocked.
