Fire destroys house in Dobbins Downs in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN - Fire destroyed a northwest Champaign home Wednesday morning, leaving six residents displaced.

Eastern Prairie Fire Protection District firefighters were called to the home of Willie Ann Davis and Larry Jones at 1508 Kings Way Drive, C, in the Dobbins Downs neighborhood at 8:40 a.m.

All the home's occupants made it out safely, but a dog died in the fire. A car was also destroyed, said Champaign County sheriff's deputy Tracy Wagner.

Wagner said about 8:30 a.m., Jones began burning boxes in a burning barrel behind the house, then left to take his girlfriend's daughter to school. Minutes later, the family's pit bull, which was in a cage in the garage, began barking.

That prompted Milton Davis, 31, to get up to see why the dog was barking. He found the garage on fire and called 911. The smoke and flames were too heavy for him to rescue the dog.

Davis and his two younger brothers got out of the home safely and watched from nearby as some 27 firefighters from Eastern Prairie, Carroll and Savoy put out the fire.

Eastern Prairie Fire Chief Michael Kobel said the fire was struck about 9:35 p.m., some 55 minutes after Davis had first reported it.

There was nothing left of the detached garage and fire burned through the roof of the single-story home.

The smoky fire couid be seen and smelled throughout the neighborhood.

Kobel said the couple had insurance for the home. He declined to put a dollar amount on the damage.

Milton Davis said the family had lived there about 20 years.

There's no Kingsway street name in Champaign, but there is a Kings Way...

Guess someone didn't know where to recycle their boxes.

There's no "King's Way" either. That's how the story reads now.

N-G: Try "Kings Way."

County engineer's office says it's Kings Way Drive. I relied on a Convention and Visitors Bureau street map I've been using for years. Thanks for caring.

Sorry, that's the Eastern Prairie fire chief, Michael Kobel. We've replaced the first reference. It got lost in one of the updates.
