Ohio man dies in I-57 crash in Douglas County

TUSCOLA — A 93-year-old Ohio man who stopped unexpectedly on Interstate 57 on Tuesday night was killed when his van was struck from behind by a semitrailer tractor truck.

Douglas County Coroner Joe Victor identified the man killed as Harold Massie, of Swanton, Ohio.

Illinois State Police at Pesotum said about 8:15 p.m., Mr. Swanton was driving his van slowly south on I-57 about a mile south of Tuscola. For an unknown reason, he stopped in the driving lane.

A southbound semitrailer tractor truck behind him was unable to stop in time to avoid hitting the rear of Mr. Massie's van, sending it into a ditch. The driver of that truck, Michael C. Britt, 37, of Minter City, Miss., was not injured.

Victor said preliminary autopsy results suggested that Mr. Massie died of injuries sustained in the accident.

He was wearing a seat belt.

No tickets were issued, police said.

I'm glad the driver of the semi was not injured and no other drivers were injured either!
