UI student charged with burglary

URBANA — A University of Illinois student who allegedly shoplifted at Market Place Mall Tuesday was charged Wednesday with burglary.

Atassi Khaldoun, 19, who listed an address in the 700 block of South Busey Avenue, Urbana, was arrested Tuesday afternoon outside the Bergner's store. He had allegedly taken four shirts, valued at $250, for which he had not paid.

Assistant State's Attorney Adam Dill said Khaldoun was found to be in possession of a tool he said he purchased off the Internet that removes security tags from clothing. Dill said security employees at Bergner's saw Khaldoun remove tags from the shirts and leave without paying for them.

Police recovered the shirts as well as several other items in his car that came from Macy's.

Assistant Public Defender Christopher Mellon said Khaldoun is a sophomore in civil engineering and asked that he be released on his own recognizance.

I'd bet you got his name backwards; that it's actually Khaldoun Atassi.
