Event to teach UI students fire prevention

URBANA — University of Illinois students will learn about fire prevention in their dormitories, houses and living quarters this weekend.

The students will be taking part in an approximate five-hour event on Saturday called Fire Factor XV, a collaborative effort of the Champaign and Urbana fire and neighborhood services departments, the University of Illinois and the Illinois Fire Service Institute.

Champaign Fire Department spokeswoman Dena Schumacher said the students will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hendrick House, 904 W. Green St., U. During the event, the students will experience escaping from a smoke-filled room, learn how to prevent fires and learn how to survive fire emergencies.

Among the scheduled activities are a live-fire demonstration focusing on the importance of fire sprinklers and the power of fire and a combat challenge pitting Fire Factor graduates against their Fire Factor instructors in a hands-on test of firefighting skills.
