Nobody hurt in fire in Urbana
URBANA — Nobody was reported hurt in a late afternoon fire that destroyed an Urbana garage.
Urbana Fire Marshal Phil Edwards said firefighters were called to a fire at 1407 Wiley Drive, Urbana, at 5:25 p.m. Friday.
Nathan Pruitt, 19, of Urbana, said he was attending a softball game when he saw smoke coming from the garage and then dialed 911.
"The smoke was rising pretty high, but the flames weren't very high," Pruitt said.
When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, they found smoke coming from the garage next to the home.
The fire also caused a power line to fall upon the garage.
While the Urbana firefighters worked to keep the fire from the garage from spreading to the house, Edwards said radiant heat melted some siding.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 5:35 p.m., but Edwards said the garage was a total loss. He said there was no vehicle inside the garage.
Edwards said nobody was home at the time of the fire, and no firefighters were hurt.
"There was a opossum in the garage," Edwards said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Friday night.
The Champaign County assessor's website listed the owner of the property as Cynthia Edler of Urbana.
