UPDATED 11 a.m. Monday
CHAMPAIGN — Police are looking for an armed robber who held up the Mobil gas station at Bloomington Road and Prospect Avenue just before 10 a.m. Monday.
Champaign police spokeswoman Rene Dunn said an employee was in her car at the station at 1511 N. Prospect Ave., just about to leave to make a bank deposit.
Dunn said the gunman approached the employee, demanded the money, and left with an undisclosed amount of cash, heading west on Bloomington Road in a gold four-door Buick.
The robber was described as black, about 25 years old, with a medium build and wearing a gray jacket with a black hood and blue jeans.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Champaign police at 217-351-4545 or Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (TIPS). Tips can also be sent at www.373tips.com or by text by sending CCTIP plus the information to 274637 (CRIMES).
I live in the area and it's the first time, that I know of, where that particular gas station has been robbed. The timing of the robbery, at that particular intersection, is just too convenient. It did occur to me as well that this might be an inside job. During the day it's a busy place, and the gas station is very well lit at night. The one characteristic that would make this place vulnerable is the promiximity to the exit on I-74.
