Democrats re-elect Klein as chairman
URBANA — Democratic precinct committeemen Wednesday night elected Al Klein of Urbana to a second full term as chairman of the Champaign County Democratic Party.
He defeated Eric Thorsland of rural Mahomet by "about than 2-to-1," Klein said.
Thorsland, a research engineer, said on his website, "It is time for new leadership, it is time to do better. We can do better, all of us together."
In addition to reelecting Klein as head of the party, Democratic committeemen meeting at the Brookens Center in east Urbana chose Laurel Prussing, the mayor of Urbana, as first vice chair of the party, Jennifer Gentry of Urbana as treasurer and Scott Bennett of Urbana as secretary.
Bennett replaces Michael Richards, a county board member from Champaign who also is managing David Gill's 13th District congressional campaign.
Klein first became Democratic chairman three years ago when he was chosen to replace former chair Tony Fabri, who resigned following allegations that he was frequently missing from his job as county auditor.
Klein said the Democrats made no changes to their party platform or bylaws at Wednesday night's meeting.
