Fire destroys Tolono home

TOLONO - Fire that destroyed a Tolono home has displaced a family of three.

Tolono Fire Lt. Brian Lukenbill said the residents of the home at 415 N. Central St. noticed flames coming from their porch about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, got out and called for help.

Lukenbill said firefighters found the front porch of the single-story home in flames, which reached into the attic. Firefighters got the fire out relatively quickly but remained there until about 2 a.m.

He said the home owner, Jared Bierman, a girlfriend, and a toddler, were able to go back to the  house early Thursday to retrieve a few personal belongings. At the time, the damage was mostly from smoke and water, Lukenbill said, although there was some isolated fire damage.

At 5:15 a.m. Thursday, a passerby saw flames coming from the house and called firefighters back.

Lukenbill said by the time they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in fire, with flames shooting through the roof.

Fire Chief Dale Grimm said investigators assumed Wednesday night that the fire started in the porch area but a definite cause has not been released as investigators are still combing the scene.

Grimm said the family lost everything. The Red Cross got them a room at a local motel, he said.

At the height of the fire, about 35 firefighters from the Tolono and Savoy fire departments were there.
