URBANA — Urbana police are investigating a shooting at a north Urbana apartment complex early today that left a woman injured.
Lt. Bryant Seraphin said officers were called to 904 N. Broadway Ave., about 2 a.m. by a 30-year-old woman who was shot in the shoulder near her apartment.
Seraphin said officers were called to a report of shots fired in the western-most building of the three-building complex at 2:23 a.m.
The woman reported that around 1:50 a.m. she was doing laundry when she noticed two young men loitering in the hallway. She returned to her apartment. About a half-hour later she went back out to return to the laundry room and saw the same two men in the hallway.
This time, however, one of them was partially masked and had a gun that he pointed at her, Seraphin said.
He said the woman immediately turned to retreat into her apartment when the man called out to her and fired one shot, which apparently hit her in the shoulder. She ran in her apartment, locked the door and called police.
Police were unable to find the men. Seraphin said the woman described them as young. One was wearing all black and the other was wearing a white T-shirt. She thought she recognized one of the men, he said.
The woman was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital, where she was still being treated about 9 a.m. Thursday.
Police are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information that might help to call the department at 217-384-2320 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.
