Urbana natural-gas leak capped

URBANA — Firefighters have cleared an Urbana intersection where a contractor broke a gas main.

Division Chief Chad Hensch said Urbana Fire Rescue was notified of the break at 1 p.m. Monday. A contractor was doing concrete repair at the intersection of Church Street and Busey Avenue and drove a stake into a gas line that was "not marked correctly by the locate service," Hensch said.

Leigh Morris of Ameren Illinois said nine customers lost service and that repairs would be completed in two to three hours.

Morris and Hensch said no gas made it into any buildings, and Hensch said no evacuation was required.

Hensch said the break has been capped.
