URBANA — Champaign-Urbana bus service will be affected by the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon races Friday evening and for several hours on Saturday.
Friday reroutes on Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses will begin at 6 p.m. and will affect several campus area routes but probably for two hours only during the 5K race that begins at 6:45 p.m. on Oak Street near St. Mary's Road and ends at Memorial Stadium.
Saturday's bus reroutes start at the beginning of the service day. Saturday service changes will affect every MTD route and probably will last until about 4 p.m., according to the MTD.
Normal Saturday ridership can be as high as 25,000, according to the MTD marketing director, Jan Kijowski.
Service will return to normal when it is safe to do so; that time is uncertain.
Vehicles are to be "pulsed" through as runners thin out, but the MTD has no control over when buses will be allowed to cross streets on which the races are being run.
The full marathon route runs through much of Champaign-Urbana, so all MTD routes will be affected. STOPwatch real-time information will be unavailable Saturday.
The marathon, half-marathon, and marathon relay start at 7 a.m. Saturday. The 10K starts at 7:35 a.m. There also will be a youth run near Memorial Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Full details on MTD reroutes will be available later this week at the MTD website, http://www.cumtd.com.
Maps of the race routes, and other information, are online at the marathon's website.
