DACC to hold rock music camp for youths

DANVILLE — Attention all kids who want to unleash their inner rock star:

Danville Area Community College's corporate and community education office and the David S. Palmer Arena will present "First Gig: Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp" in late June.

The week-long day camp is for youth, ages 10 to 18, who want to compose, produce and perform like a rock star with the help of musicians with years of studio and live performance experience.

They can take fundamental classes in vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard and drums from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25-29 at DACC's Bremer Center, 2000 E. Main St., Danville.

Guitarists, depending on their experience, will learn everything from basic chords, picking and strumming to soloing techniques and advanced rhythm guitar. Singers will learn skills to improve their delivery and enhance their voices. And drummers will learn tuning, dynamics, timing and warm-up exercises as well as a variety of rock grooves ranging from simple to complex.

Kids also can take add-on sessions in song writing and production, which will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. June 25-28 at the Bremer Center.

A final concert for the public, in which students get to perform in a band on stage with the help of a number of area musicians, will be held at 1 p.m. June 30 at the arena, 100 W. Main St., Danville. Rehearsals will be held from 9 a.m. to noon that day.

The concert will be recorded, and a DVD will be available for parents.

The camp will be overseen by musicians Tom Grassman, Michael "Guido" Estevez and Jeff Markland who make up The Chicago Blackhawks Band, the official band of the Chicago Blackhawks professional hockey team.

Thanks to an area sponsor, the admission fee has been reduced from $300 to $150, and the fee for an add-on session is $50.

Add-on sessions may be taken by themselves outside of the day camp for a $100 fee.

"We have had great support thus far for the camp," said Peter Blackmon, the arena's general manager. "One sponsor in particular thanks music as part of his success today and wanted to give back in a major way."

People can register online at http://www.dacc.edu/cce, or by submitting a registration form and payment to DACC Community Education, 2917 N. Vermilion St., Danville, IL 61832. For registration information, contact Blackman at 431-2424 or email firstgigdanville@gmail.com.
