Danville to seek grant for work at schools

DANVILLE — School officials are going after state funding to help with scheduled improvements at three schools.

Board members on Monday approved applying for up to $50,000 in School Maintenance Project Grant funding from the Illinois State Board of Education. If the district is awarded a grant, it must provide a local match.

Heather McKiernan, business and finance director for the District, said Danville would use the grant to help pay for improvements at Northeast, Cannon and Edison elementary schools, which are scheduled to take place this year and in 2013.

McKiernan said the projects are included in a long-term facilities plan for the district. They include several health-life safety projects such as removing asbestos floor tiles and installing new flooring in eight small rooms at Northeast, installing flameproof or fire retardant stage curtains and a new rigging system at Cannon, and removing an old, deteriorating roof membrane and installing a new one at Edison.

"Others are just projects we need to get done," McKiernan said.

They include removing deteriorating or damaged window frames and installing new ones at Northeast, stabilizing an interior masonry wall, excavating and replacing piping in Cannon's kitchen and replacing plumbing fixtures in a boys' restroom at Edison.

All of the work is estimated at about $594,500, so McKiernan said the state funding would help.

She said state officials announced in March that the school maintenance money would be available this year. They haven't said when they will announce the recipients.
