Urbana man arrested in accidental shooting

URBANA — An Urbana teen is in police custody for accidentally shooting his cousin in the knee over the weekend.

Urbana police investigator Dave Roesch said William L. Ayres Jr., 19, who listed an address in the 2500 block of Prairie Green, was arrested late Monday morning.

Roesch said about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a call on Prairie Green in which an 18-year-old man claimed to have been shot in a drive-by shooting.

Roesch said deputies and Urbana patrol officers investigated and learned that the incident really occurred in an apartment in the 2500 block of Prairie Green.

"William was playing with a gun as they were sitting in a room listening to music," Roesch said. "It's an accident."

Because of a prior conviction, Ayres is not allowed to possess a weapon.

Roesch said police tracked down Ayres at his girlfriend's apartment on South Cottage Grove Avenue on Monday.

"He climbed out the window to the roof while we were at the front door," Roesch said.

Ayres eventually came in and was arrested. ON Tuesday, he was charged with unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon.

Roesch said Ayres' cousin was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment Saturday, but officials there had no information about him.
