UI students charged in stadium break-in

CHAMPAIGN — Two University of Illinois students who allegedly tried to steal clothing from a lounge at Memorial Stadium early Wednesday have been charged with misdemeanor theft.

The teens, who both listed an address in the 800 block of West Pennsylvania Avenue, were taken into custody about 3:15 a.m. after being caught by employees.

Lt. Roy Acree said the pair apparently climbed over a fence to get in the stadium and were able to get in the recruiting lounge area, where UI sportswear is displayed on mannequins.

"These guys tried to steal some of the jerseys. The overnight workers heard noises and ran after them and made them stop and return the jerseys," he said.

"We have reason to believe alcohol was a motivation," he added.

There was apparently no damage done and the jerseys were returned.

Acree said the pair had good reason to stop.

"One of the people chasing after them is a former football player. He's 6 feet 6 inches and 315 pounds," Acree said.
