Nobody reported injured in fire at apartment building

CHAMPAIGN — Fire department investigators are investigating the cause of a fire at a three-story apartment building Thursday in Champaign.

Champaign Deputy Fire Chief Steve Clarkson said firefighters were called to a building at 507 W. White St., Champaign, at 6:32 p.m.

"We got a report of smoke in the area and around the building," Clarkson said.

When the firefighters arrived a few minutes later, they found smoke and a smoldering fire in one corner of a balcony on the second and third floors of the building.

"The fire was in the wall of the patio," he said.

Clarkson said firefighters extinguished the fire before it could extend to the rest of the building.

"It was a quick turn around to a short-term problem," he said. "The guys got on it and took care of business."

Clarkson said several occupants of the building were evacuated as a precaution. Nobody was reported hurt.

"The occupants should be able to get right back in the building tonight," he said.

He said it was too soon to determine the extent or cause of the fire.

The Champaign County assessor's website listed the owner of the building as Faron Properties of Champaign.
