Staley Road closure will last for several weeks

Champaign – It will be mid-June at the earliest before Staley Road between Springfield Avenue and Bradley Avenue reopens.

The city closed that part of Staley Road on Wednesdaty, for the first phase of pavement work that will eventually extend to Bloomington Road.

The city agreed in 2009 to take over responsibility for that stretch of Staley Road from the state, which provided some money for the road work. The pavement was built in 1974, according to the city, and is "old and failing at many locations and needs to be upgraded from both a maintenance and a safety standpoint."

Local residential and business access will be available during the closure, but otherwise Staley will be closed for six to 10 weeks.

The intent is to finish the entire stretch to Bloomington Road before the start of the fall semester.
